My father, William Jordan, was born in 1931 and was relatively young when American soldiers were stationed in Belfast. His grandfather,James Hutton made him a wooden box to carry shoe polish and brushes and off he went to the centre of Belfast to make his fortune shining the shoes of the "Rich Americans". He picked a spot at Belfast City Hall and everything went well for an hour until he was caught by a policeman! You were supposed to have a licence! Instead of making his fortune his poor grandfather had to pay a fine to Belfast City Council
