In early 1945, my father, Dennis Cox, who was 14 years old at the time, witnessed a sand coloured Messerschmitt BF109 fighter flying at about 500 feet from the ground, and travelling at about 200 miles an hour. There was ack-ack guns chasing him, but he was too low. It looked like it was an observation plane surveying an area of Acton, West London where V1 flying bombs had been dropping. My father was so close to the plane that he was able to wave to the pilot and the pilot waved back.
