During the war I lived in Tavistock in Devon. Part of my WVS work took me to Plymouth, which i knew very well.
One day I went there to find the landscape changed dramatically after a bombing raid. I could no longer find my way across the city.
There had been concern about the ancient relic Drake's Drum, and this was moved to safety to Buckfast Abbey. After the raids on Plymouth the legend was remembered, "If Drake's Drum should be moved from its rightful home, the city will fall"
They brought it back to Plymouth and although raids continued in the West Country, The City was never hit again.
