I worked in the Royal Arsenal Woolwich. A notice board alerted employees on bomb damage, and on this day our house was listed on it. On arriving home there was no roof, windows or front door. My mother’s only worry seemed to be that her clean and recently ironed laundry, kept in the airing cupboard, wouldn’t get sooty. The chimney had cracked and soot from the open fire was everywhere
