My father told me of the time when he was torpedoed off the Eagle in the Med. He was below decks and said his feet didn't touch the ladder because of the press of men trying to reach the decks. He saved 23 lives, by swimming to the life rafts with survivors. After three hours in the water he was picked up and told a funny story about having a shower and a hand appearing with a toddy of rum. After this had happened six times a voice said" How many more are there in there?" He replied, "There's only me!" He spent three months in Osborne House on the Isle of Wight - this was an Officers' Rest Home.
