We lived in the Newsham Park area of Liverpool, right next to Lister Drive power station. I will never forget, night after night, listening to the drone of hundreds of German bombers flying low over the park as we sat in the air raid shelter.By a miracle, our house was never hit and all of my family survived. It became almost normal to go to work the next morning and see prams, bedsheets and toys hanging from the trees; when you got into work, you'd notice all the missing faces....
One afternoon, my friend asked me to drop a sick note off at work for her. Walking down West Derby Road, a German bomber flew right behind me and fired a straight line of bullets at me as I ran down the road. All I remember is that someone grabbed me and pushed me to the ground. Whoever he was, he probably saved my life.
The morale of the people during those years can never be put into words. It's amazing how much you can stand when you have no choice.
I love my country, and I'm proud of our Queen. I hope my little contribution to the war effort helped, because what might have been does not bear thinking about.
