Sitting on the pantry Table
Darnall - Sheffield
By Audrey Fern
The day the war broke out, I fell and broke my arm and spent three days in hospital.
Two bombs had fallen on Swale Road and Kirby Road and I can remember the glass being blown out of the windows of the houses.
When the sirens went, my mother used to put me on the table in our pantry for safekeeping. I was seven years old at the time and after a week of sitting on that table I found it really boring.
I, also, I remember going on Home Service School. This was when someone offered their front room and we were taught there, only for the morning or the afternoon, not both. There were about 10 or 12 of us in the room.
I do, of course, remember the street parties after the war was over, especially the potted meat sandwiches.
