When my grandfather was stationed in South Africa with the RAF, he met my grandmother, a Sgt in the South African Army. T
hey started going out, and eventually got engaged. Because they were both in the forces, the couldn't aford to buy an engagement ring, so my grandfather carved one from a small offcut piece of a new material called PERSPEX that he "BORROWED" from the work shop.
As perspex was a new material that was only just starting to be used for aircraft cockpits, he once estimated that the ring cost the RAF about 6 months of his wages.
