Tomb of Robert the Bruce, Dunfermline Abbey
Robert the Bruce (1274-1329), crowned first King of Scotland in 1306
The Declaration of Arbroath, written by Scottish clerics for King Robert Bruce in 1320, is a clear and unambiguous statement of the desire for Scottish freedom from English rule:
For so long as 100 of us remain alive / We will not in any degree be subject to the rule of the English / For it is not for glory, riches or honour that we fight / But for liberty alone, which no good man loses, but with his life.
Edward destroyed much of Dunfermline Abbey in 1303.
