The Year 12 and 13 Medina High School students took part in the 'Out of Focus' photography project to create a snapshot of 2006 the Isle of Wight Festival and also to learn techniques of contemporary photojournalism. | | Katy Thorogood's photo |
Using up-to-date digital SLR cameras and computer technology, eight students took photographs during the festival, the build-up in the days before the event and around areas away from the main stage to capture a flavour of people's true festival experiences. The students worked alongside professional documentary and fine-art photographer Matt Pontin who also taught the students time-lapse photography to create short video sequences. Matt was pleased with how the pictures turned out: "The project was a great opportunity for me to work on the Island, where I grew up, and deliver a documentary project and professional experience to such an enthusiastic group of young photographers - the ideas explored and images produced were really impressive!’" These photographs may be published in a book that could be available in time for next year's festival. | | Kendal Noctor's view of the festival |
The 'Out of Focus' Photojournalism Project was supported by Creative Partnerships which works to develop young people’s creativity, imagination, potential and ambition through a varied programme of activities. Other partners included the Isle of Wight music college, Platform One and festival organisers, Solo. |
