The Black Velvets Interview

Indy Almroth-Wright
The Liverpudlian four man rock machine brought their old school, filthy rock n' roll to the Joiners in February - BBC Hampshire's Indy Almroth-Wright caught up with the band's bass pounder, Dave Dutton...

The Black Velvets are

  • Paul Carden - Vocals
  • Dave Dutton - Bass
  • Nick Kilroe - Drums
  • Robbie Ross - Guitar

You're about a month into a three month tour at the moment how's it going?
It's going fantastic, I'm excited about all the gigs but it's just going a bit too quick and I want to have loads more to be honest! The more touring the better!

They've all been good shows - they've been sort of similar because we're playing the same set every night. So far, each audience has been really good, and we've also sold out most of the shows which is quite cool.

How and when did the four of you get together?
We've been together for about 1 1/2 years. Me and Paul are cousins so we've been together all our lives, Nick was in school with us and Robbie was at university doing art with my girlfriend.

What kind of music did you all grown up on?
Stuff like Guns n' Roses, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Stones, all the classic rock bands really.

What jobs did you have before you hit the road of rock n' roll?
We've done some of the worst jobs in the world!

Ready to rock!

I've had to work carrying kebabs round and delivering things to chip shops, bar work, kitchen porter just all kinds of really crappy jobs - but you have to get money somewhere! I got sacked from most of my jobs because I kept leaving to do gigs.

You've supported some great bands including The Who and The Killers, what's been the highlight so far?
Obviously playing with The Who was amazing because they've been our idols since we were about 14 years old, we did three dates with them at the Forum in Camden, that was amazing playing with them - it's probably the best thing I've done yet.

Do you have any pre-gig band rituals?
I suppose so, we're as cheesy as everyone else when it comes to that kind of thing - we have the usual group hug and a good 'chink' with a glass of something!

Who's your music legend?
Personally it would probably be someone like Jimi Hendrix, he's a legend.

What are you doing for the summer?
We've got our album coming out and I think we're doing pretty much all the festivals.
