One of the prairie clematis developed by Raymond Evison, 'Chinook' has flowers that are violet- blue, with reflexed tepals. Unlike the climbing varieties, this herbaceous clematis is a lower growing variety that's ideal for a mixed border where it can be planted to cover low shrubs or fill spaces left by early flowering perennials. Herbaceous clematis flower on the current year's growth. Cut them back to about 15-20cm (6-8in) above soil level in early spring before new growth appears.
