Young at Heart DVD (1954)

Frank Sinatra plays bitter to Doris Day's sweet, and somewhere in the middle they hit the flavour of love in a musical that boasts a score by Cole Porter. An absolute must-have film for any Day fan, this DVD is a welcome release, if somewhat limited in terms of digital tricks.

The fullscreen transfer is quite competent in handling the vibrant Technicolor tones that lend a rosy glow to every frame of the movie. A little grain does creep in, like during the beach scene, and there is some minor print damage, but there's little to get worked-up over.

A remixed sound track would have been lovely for this musical. Sadly, it's just a 2.0 mono effort on this disc, although it is clear and doesn’t distort, even during the most strident singing.

Extra features include the trailer, (which shows you just how bad the film could have looked), and a small image gallery. Not a definitive release then, but this DVD should still prove tempting to fans.
