Roman Polanski's first film since 1994's "Death & the Maiden", is an atmospheric supernatural thriller, now released onto a superb DVD that's a must-have for Polanski fans.
Warm and muted colour tones create an unsettling backdrop that's transferred beautifully to disc. Sharp with detail, the picture quality is excellent throughout.
The 5.1 sound mix concentrates on separating the music score around the speakers with subtle but impressive results. One of the special features on the disc allows you to listen to the music alone. Although it is in stereo, it's not nearly as effective as the 5.1 track.
Roman Polanski's commentary on this disc is very good, and it's a shame that he didn't do one for the otherwise excellent "Chinatown" DVD. Polanski spends a lot of time discussing the technical aspects of the film and the tricks that he employed to get around the modest budget, which included creating New York in Paris. It's interesting to listen to, although he does spend some time discussing the merits of CGI without ever really siding for or against it.
