ArC - being a good citizen

Children in Colchester have been exploring the idea of what it means to be a good citizen through art work.

The ArC project which has been taking place in schools in Colchester has been allowing children to explore the idea of what it means to be a good citizen.

Pupils in schools, as young and 5-years-old, have been working with local artists to produce pieces of work that reflect now they fit into modern day society.

Altogether 15 schools have taken part in the project allowing them to consider the idea of what they would call an intelligent citizen.

Laura Davidson - Education and Access Officer at Firstsite said: "I think it's really exciting because so many pupils in each of the schools have taken part.

"They have been learning in a different way, its about the creative impact art has had on the curriculum."

The project teaches children good citizenship because they have been involved in making the art work it makes them proud of what they've done.

Laura continued: "We here a lot about vandalism but if those children have taken part in that, then they are going to be looked after.

"So it's just a simple example of promoting pride and awareness of their community which I think is very positive."

The Arc exhibition is being unveiled in three parts, at the moment on display at Firsite you can see art from St John's Green Primary who have been working with Ian Etheridge, Monkwick Infants and Alison Stockmarr, Monkwick Juniors and Sam Glazer, North Primary and Lynne Weddle, and St George's Infants with Sarah Sabin.
