The Plymouths

They're not from Plymouth, they're from Bournemouth. The energetic indie/electro/new wave band with an 80s influence are fast gaining a reputation for their ever-increasingly higher profile gigs. Listen to sessions and interviews.

It's a busy time for The Plymouths. As a band they've been going for several years, but in their current line up, the past few months have been particularly hectic.

They're definitely sounding like a band on the up. Along with recording sessions in London they've been bagging ever higher-profile gigs - and now they're finding they've got interest from the music industry too.

But the most obvious question first: why are they called The Plymouths when they're from Bournemouth?

Lead vocalist Nick explains: "It's just one of those things. When we were forming the band, a couple of us had been in bands before and we needed a name, and one of us said 'Why not The Plymouths?' - and it's just stuck."

Day jobs

The band are currently all still holding down day jobs - says Nick: "We're in studios in London and you meet Sting's guitarist and then you're back to work on the Monday and you think, 'What was that about?'."

Out of their London studio sessions, The Plymouths have got four tracks ready and two of them were acoustically reworked for their appearance on BBC Radio Solent's Sally Taylor programme (in July 2008), in what was the band's first ever acoustic-based live set.

Listen to acoustic versions of tracks Prisoner and Party, and to the interview from the show.

In September 2008, the band appeared on BBC Radio Solent's South:Live programme (Sundays 7 - 9pm). Their four track full band set more accurately captures the energy and live sound of the band as opposed to the more mellow acoustic versions featured above.

Listen to the interview with South:Live presenter Phil Jackson, and to the band performing tracks Prisoners, Miss Tokyo, Party and Underdog.
