Elkie Brooks

Elkie Brooks will be performing

Gillingham Festival 2008

For three weeks in July the north Dorset town of Gillingham will be in full festival swing, with everything from fun runs to theatre to live music and food & drink - and a range of homegrown musical talent from Dorset.

Local Dorset musicians lead the entertainment at this year's Gillingham Festival, sharing the bill with big name acts like Elkie Brooks and jazz legend Chris Barber.

The Rock Doctors and Ben Waters, from Weymouth, kick off events in the Marquee on Friday 11 July.

Pianist Ben is making a name for himself nationally, and recently performed live on BBC Radio Solent's Sally Taylor weekend programme.

Other local Dorset bands appearing throughout the festival include Mustang Sally, King Tutz & Queenz of D'Nile, Loose Connections, Bourbon & Ice, Touch of Country and Graham & Friends.

The Barrel House Blues Band will be supporting Geno Washington on Saturday 19 July, and The Mayor of Gillingham's Civic Day will be held at the festival on Sunday 20 July, backed up by yet more Dorset musical talent - The Ratpack, Baddest Blues Band (Ever) and State of Undress.

Other highlights include The Acoustic Strawbs on Sunday 13 July, the legendary jazz man Chris Barber plays on Wednesday 16 July - featuring trumpeter's Pat Halcox's last gig after 54 years playing with Chris, while Elkie Brooks performs on Thursday 17 July.
The complete programme can be seen on the festival website, and if you want to get involved in the festival - either as a performer or a volunteer - you can get in touch with the organisers through their website:
