Having a Blast in Cumbria

This year's BBC Blast reporter Tasha Hannon tells us a little bit about herself and her excitement at working with the Cumbria team ...

I’m currently studying Journalism at Cumbria University and keeping my fingers crossed that one day I might just make it to be a real journalist in the real world! I’ve just finished my second year of my degree and with only one year left to go I can’t believe the time has gone so quickly.

My passions in life are music, writing, travel and the Eurovision Song Contest. At the moment I’m living in Carlisle but my real home is a tiny village called Warcop about 40 miles south of here, not the most buzzing of places but we do throw a good village fete.

I first became interested in journalism when the BBC Bus landed in Kirkby Stephen where I went to secondary school. I was fascinated with live broadcast and decided it was something I wanted to be a part of. In April I came across an advert for the BBC Blast reporter scheme and thought it looked liked an excellent opportunity to gain some real newsroom, online and broadcast experience.

I applied, and was lucky enough to be offered a place for the summer to cover local music festivals along with other arts performances and exhibitions. I was sent down to BBC Bristol for two days training where I had the chance to meet other Blast reporters from around the UK and spent most of my time in total awe of everything. It was great to meet other people and share ideas about what we wanted to achieve from our time on placement.

So here I am, in the BBC Cumbria office, very excited and very much looking forward to a fun filled eight weeks with the team!
