News from Recycle Week

Hundreds of youngsters from schools across Coventry and Warwickshire took part in 2008 and Beyond - a series of workshops over Recycle Week.

The workshops aimed to encourage the children to think about the impact their everyday lives have on people and the planet, and give them some simple ideas for making a positive difference.

The fun, interactive workshops, that took place in the green haven of Coombe Country Park, encouraged children to make positive changes to their lifestyles. Such events rely upon the support of volunteers to run smoothly.

Three Agents 4 Change, Dave Garrett, Mark Toor and Yuriko Yabu, rallied around on the day. The Agents helped the children search and identify grassland mini-beasts, have-a-go at composting and learn about eco friendly foods.

Theatre groups, local authority officers, environmental organisations and performers from Momo Theatre's comedy show also spelled out the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling to reduce the amount of waste we all produce in a fun way.

Loving every minute

Yuriko loved every minute, saying: “2008 and Beyond was a great opportunity for school children to learn about and appreciate the safe environment and nature. I was glad that I could contribute to the event, at the same time as having fun with the children!”

Volunteering at events like this are a bonus to the regular excellent volunteering opportunities provided by environmental organisations.

Dave, Volunteer

Both Mark and Dave volunteer with a scheme called Eco schools. Eco-Schools is an internationally recognised school environmental improvement programme led by students – check out your local council website to get involved!

This gives the opportunity for you work with a school to reduce waste, energy use and water consumption. You can also help them to improve school grounds and promote healthy living and green travel.

Dave, a Coventry University student told me about his experience. He said: "As a university student, studying a Geography degree, volunteering with the Eco-Schools programme has enabled me to further my skills and adapt them to necessary situations.

"The Eco-Schools programme has the message of bringing global ecological concerns to the classroom and allowing children to do their bit and become eco-friendly themselves. With this positive message it is hoped that children will carry forward these eco-principles as they grow up."

Similarly, Mark recognises the value of volunteering with Eco schools. He said: “It is really important to communicate some complex issues at a global level and make it relevant to children as climate change will affect their futures if they don’t engage with making a change at an early age. I am doing a Masters in Climate Change and combining my studies with volunteer work through 'Eco Schools’ enables me to make a practical difference while learning – it’s great fun too!”

2008 and Beyond is organised in partnership by Rugby Borough Council, Coventry City Council, North Warwickshire Borough Council and Action 21 (Warwick District).
