Gig on the Green 2009

As part of the 'Kernow Live' event, a day of live music was in store as Gig on the Green 2009 took place in Boscawen Park, Truro on Sunday 2 August 2009. BBC Cornwall's Blast reporter Matt Nicholas reports.

The ground may have been wet on this Sunday afternoon, but nobody's spirit was dampened courtesy of the sizzling talent appearing throughout the course of the day.

All The Fires

With music ranging from punk to folk there was surely something for every musical palette. Just some of the acts that graced the West Briton stage were; Oracy, Downtown Riots, All the Fires and one-man-band Patrick James Pearson.

Opening the stage for the beginning of over seven hours of music was Oracy, a four piece band bringing indie rock to the crowd with a healthy smattering of electronics and synths thrown in for good measure. The audience may not have quite woken up when Oracy took to the stage but by the end everyone was surely wide awake and ready for more.

Downtown Riots

Next up were Downtown Riots, a female fronted band with a clear punk influence that managed to mix ferocity with melody and come up with a sound that would please the most demanding of rock fans. The band charged through their set clearly firing on all cylinders as they roared track after track onto the audience, even a brief delay due to equipment failure did not stop this band putting on a distinct performance.

All the Fires were to follow, a six piece playing a gorgeous blend of folk music laced with country, although juxtaposition to the prior performance, was very well received. With vocal duties being shared by both keyboard player and cellist, the set was varied and a pleasure to behold on a warm afternoon and fitted the surroundings and greenery of Boscawen Park wonderfully.

One member of the audience, when asked about what they felt about the event, responded:

"I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity of the acts; it's nice to see something of this size and quality free on my doorstep."

Patrick James Pearson was next on the bill, a brilliant lone performer armed with a keyboard, bass drum and a tambourine attached to none other than his foot in a unique one-man-band setup.

This young artist is surely set for bigger things, with his infectious pop music performed with enthusiasm and originality that was a joy to listen to. With original tracks such as 'Russian Dolls' and a song about the plight of humble honey bee, Patrick James Pearson is a certainly an artist to look out for.

There were many other high-quality acts throughout the evening, with bands such as Marble Fairy, Auction for the Promise Club and My Elvis Blackout due to perform to the crowds.
