Voodoo Hairdoo from Bude

Ska in the Bar

It was another successful gig at Bar 35, Bude, for local band, Voodoo Hairdoo. The band are among several local acts young and old who have been offered the opportunity to strut their stuff in front of a lively crowd.

On Friday 17 July local band, Voodoo Hairdoo, took to the Bar 35 stage and delighted the Bude crowd with a two hour set of pure funk/ska.

This five piece band, from Bude are Stuart Marshall, vocals/guitar; Ian Cox, Bass; Ross McIntyre, lead guitar/vocals; Ian Macdonald, drums and Theresa Macdonald, Keyboard/synth. Their set consisted of a carefully selected and adapted array of their own material and covers such as 'Up Town Top Rankin'. The reception from the crowd was incredible as they crammed themselves into the somewhat cozy space of the bar.

The vibe was truly phenomenal as the audience began to liven up to the jaunty rhythms and winding bass lines of this real retro reggae evening.

Bar 35 now boasts a new dance floor, sound system and an alcove for bands and DJs to set up their equipment.

I spoke to local DJ, Max Marshall to find out just how much of a difference the renovation has made.

Blast: Why do you think that Bar 35 is a good venue for live music?

Max: "I play there every month with another DJ called SoSo music, Andy Hutt, and the new renovation means that the acoustics are better and the audience can really appreciate the music."

Blast: Tell us a bit about when you DJ there, are you restricted with what music you can play?

Max: "Our monthly event is called 'The Worst Thing a DJ Could Do' and it's getting better each time. We play a massive range of music, funk, dubstep, DnB, house, chart remixes and electro. I think Bude is becoming a lot more open minded.

"I DJ there often and they let me play what I want and leave me to my own devices which is why I think it is so popular with the locals."
