The weather may have been dark and wet in Truro on Thursday evening, but the acts that were to perform inside 'Vertigo' bar were enough to brighten up anyone's evening. BBC Cornwall's Blast reporter Matt Nicholas went backstage to interview Steph Newton. Click on the link below to hear the interview: Help playing audio/video First to play was Samuel Powell, a young singer-songwriter who, armed with just a classical guitar won over the audience with his style of infusing flamenco and folk guitar with a soulful, honest voice which showed this young artist was playing from the heart. Original tracks such as 'Dolphins', 'White Powder', and 'Mandolin' were performed throughout his set with unbridled confidence. Samuel also sang a number penned only the day before flawlessly. ![]() Steph performing live Next to perform was the headline act; Lostwithiel based soul-siren Steph Newton with her brand of melodic pop that was delivered with a poise and vigour seldom seen in such a young woman. With influences such as Alicia Keys and Beverly Knight clearly on her sleeve, diversity was shown with songs featuring move-your-feet tempos, strong choruses and dynamics switching effortlessly from heartfelt cries to whisper sensitivity. With the majority of her set being original material, the songstress managed to sneak in a wonderfully received cover of Lady Gaga's 'Poker Face' to an appreciative audience along with an encore featuring Jackie Wilson's classic trackĀ 'I Get The Sweetest Feeling'.
