Here at BBC Cornwall we always look forward to hearing what you're getting up to for Children In Need. But this has to be the biggest yet, not just for Cornwall, but the whole of the UK! The plan is to fill Cornwall with song on the evening of 9 November 2007 - the Friday preceding Children in Need night - to sing the anthem in tribute of 17th century Cornish hero Bishop Sir Jonathan Trelawny which includes the rousing chorus: And shall Trelawny live, For the full lyrics, click on the link below: The event is being supported by St Austell Brewery and will take place in participating pubs up and down the county – with the focal point for the challenge being the Jubilee Inn, based in Trelawny's home parish of Pelynt. Everyone is being invited to enjoy an evening of social singing, which will be led by members of local male voice choirs. Participants will be asked for £1 each, with the money going to BBC Children in Need. ![]() Pudsey Bear The climax of the event will be the synchronised singing of 'Trelawny', also known as 'The Song of the Western Men' at about 9.30pm. "We thought it would be a fun and uniquely Cornish challenge to actually get a full 20,000 Cornishmen and women singing this wonderful anthem," says Terry Hodge, the chairman of the Cornish Federation of Male Voice Choirs. "We want people to gather their family and friends together, go to one of the participating pubs and just join in. If we can get the full 20,000 then that would be an amazing £20,000 for Children in Need." "We hope it will be an evening that will live long in the memory as well as raising thousands of pounds for Children in Need." St Austell Brewery Managing Director James Staughton, whose local pub is the Jubilee Inn, said: “We are delighted to be supporting such an innovative Cornish challenge. I hope thousands of people will join in at St Austell and other pubs across Cornwall.” last updated: 13/11/07 |
