Complaint
A viewer’s complaint that Laura Kuenssberg had been incorrect in saying UK Government was planning to spend £10 billion with BAE building ships on the Clyde resulted in a posting by BBC News on the Corrections and Clarifications page of the BBC website which explained that it was the government of Norway which was planning to place the £10 billion order. The viewer complained that this was insufficient, and that an on-air correction was required. The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the BBC’s editorial standards of accuracy.
Outcome
The inaccuracy occurred in an interview with the Scottish First Minister, and Ms Kuenssberg was pressing him on whether there was a potential mismatch between the SNP’s view on the arms trade and its approach to defence contracts awarded to Clyde Shipbuilders. As her point was unaffected by which government was intending to place the order, the ECU considered that the inaccuracy was not so misleading as to require on-air correction and that the Corrections and Clarifications posting was sufficient to resolve the issue of complaint.
