Complaint

A viewer complained about a report on comments by the Prime Minister during a visit to Dover concerning illegal immigration by small boats. The complaint argued that Reform UK was given disproportionate prominence because the item included comments and references relating to the party and did not give sufficient weight to alternative political viewpoints. The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the BBC’s editorial standards of impartiality.

Outcome

The ECU found that decisions about the selection and inclusion of political comments are matters of editorial judgement and, in themselves, do not indicate a breach of editorial standards. In this case, the report included comments from a Conservative minister and the subsequent analysis outlined responses from Reform UK, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party of England and Wales.

The ECU considered that the anticipated announcement by Nigel Farage of a significant change in Reform UK’s policy on illegal migration was a matter of political significance and it was editorially justifiable for the item to include reference to it. It concluded that the report reflected a range of political viewpoints and could not reasonably be said to have presented only Reform UK’s perspective.
