3 Non-Blondes

The cast of 3 Non-Blondes

"3 Non-Blondes burst onto the screens on launch night," remembers the channel's former Controller, Stuart Murphy, "and in many ways it was the gun which started our comedy race".

Starring Ninia Benjamin, Tameka Empson and Jocelyn Jee Esien, the show was an original fusion of sketch-comedy and filmed pranks, which cast members of the public as bit-players in part-scripted, part-improvised skits.

One continuing gag, for example, features a woman going into random shops saying: "Excuse me, I'm a virgin, I was wondering if you had any advice."

A positive and upfront statement of what the new digital channel was all about, the show's performers were relative unknowns, assembled by hidden camera supremo Gary Reich, who'd previously worked with Ali G and Dom Joly.

In a marked difference from mainstream comedy, this was a series about three black women (hence the title), and yet, throughout its life, the performers were adamant that neither gender nor colour were anything to do with the humour.

That said, one sketch involves a Nigerian character stopping passers-by and asking for directions, before clarifying: "If I run like a cheetah, how long with it take me?"

Other notable running gags include a job hunter with Britain's worst CV; a super-busy woman who goes to ridiculous lengths to circumnavigate queues ("I did phone ahead"); a charity worker who's after hugs and kisses rather than cash and a brash African woman who tries to make a series of outrageous purchases ("I'd like a big bird, please").

A ratings and critical success, the show ran for two series, before spawning a spin-off, Little Miss Jocelyn, starring Jee Esien.
