Will the London logo finish last?

Good morning from a sunny London, and first a little introduction. I'm James Harrod and I'm pleased to say I've just joined the World Have Your Say team.

I was coming in on the train a couple of hours ago and, as ever, we passed the building site for the Olympic Games - due to be held in London in 2012. I looked across at a group of commuters sitting opposite me, all reading different newspapers. And - on every front page - the new logo for the Games, unveiled yesterday. The headlines weren't very flattering. But Tessa Jowell, the Olympics minister for Britain, said the logo was "very edgy, very imaginative", and that "kids will see it as a badge of ambition". But within hours of the logo launch, 10-thousand people had signed an on-line petition calling for it to be scrapped and replaced. What do you think? Is it a futuristic symbol that will kick-start the process of selling some £750m of merchandise, or is it a load of rubbish destined for the scrapheap? Here's what's around today...

...The main focus for today's show will be the anniversary of the 1967 Middle East War, also known as the Six Day War. We'll be speaking to soldiers and their families, volunteers, journalists who will be telling us their thoughts and memories of the events that took place during the conflict. Joining us in the studio will be David Horovitz, Editor-in-chief of the Jerusalem post and from Amman we'll hear from Ayman Al Safadi, Editor of the Al Ghad newspaper. If you have anything you'd like to ask them or indeed any of our guests tonight, leave us a message.

Although we'll be talking about the 6-day war today there's still room for other topics, here's a few I've seen this morning. Martin Binyon writing in the Times today writes a piece asking if Vladimir Putin is leading Russia into fascism? It's a bold statement but what do you think, does he have a point? Click here to read his article and let us know what you think.

Meantime, a US military judge has thrown out charges against two Guantanamo Bay detainees. Both cases collapsed because military authorities had failed to designate the men as "unlawful" enemy combatants. So does this cast fresh doubt on efforts to try foreign terror suspects at Guantanamo?

News from Pakistan came too late for the show last night, but this may be worth debating - President Pervez Musharraf has signed into immediate effect measures to increase control over the media. Current regulations related to television have been extended to the internet and mobile phones. Over the weekend, the largest TV channel, Geo News, was taken off-air after it ignored warnings not to broadcast a current affairs show. One question - is President Musharraf going too far?

Allison Stokke - our mistake

We ran a story last week about the High School pole vaulter - Allison Stokke - who, much to her annoyance, has become somewhat of an online celebrity following a video posted about her on youtube (click here for our original story).

We said...

...she'd posted this video herself. But it has now come to our attention that she did not post this video, or in fact any of the images you can now see of her on-line.

This mistake was brought to our attention by a listener, Maria. Here's some of the email she sent us...

1. Allison did not originally post the interview on YouTube. Someone else did. Nor did she "give out" any inappropriate information about herself.

2. It's not even the interview that what started it. The trouble began when another, less reputable sports site published a picture of her idly adjusting her hair. Unlike the snoozer of a video on YouTube, that picture is pretty stunning. Someone found other pictures taken of her -- mostly innocent sporting event photos when she was underage -- and have plastered them all over the Internet, even registering a URL of her name.

So, I have to say I'm a bit disappointed with the way this story was presented. While I feel the subject of what you do on the Internet is important, presenting this poor girl as an example is not representative of the problem itself. She did absolutely nothing to incur the crisis she faces.

At WHYS we set the highest standards for ourselves but on occasion we get things wrong, this was one of those occasions.

We have apologised to all concerned, but if you feel misled we also extend an apology to you.

LIVE - Alan, the next cold war, and a weighty cabin crew

Three subjects to get your teeth into today. We're starting off with the video of our colleague Alan Johnston and your messages to him, then we'll move on to the much-discussed idea that the US and Russia are looking at the next Cold War and finally the Indian air-hostesses that have lost their jobs because they were over the specified weight.
Why would anyone want to go and work in Iraq?

Struggling to find a decent line in any of the stories I've read this morning I phoned x70635 (my office extension) hoping to find salvation. Instead I found my newest colleague and friend (my word not hers) Vicki. Well, I thought, she'll do (just kidding Vick!!) I then asked her what we should be talking about today and she said, "the recent abductions in Iraq, and we should be asking, why would anyone want to go and work in Iraq?"

So there you are, i've asked it. What do you make of this story?...

Do find it surprising that anyone would take up work in Iraq who didn't already live there? Have you worked there before, if so, what made you go?

Here are a few other things knocking around today. As the parents of the abducted british girl, Madeline McCann, make their way to Rome for an audience with the Pope some are asking whether there's been too much coverage of this case in the media. This is a question the BBC itself answered last week and one being debated on this yahoo forum . What do you think? Is too much being made of this little girls disappearance, or should every thing possible be done to keep her story in the public eye until she's found? Is the search for Madeline detracting from the search for other missing children?

The menace of the internet. Sitting on the ever delayed tube this morning i read a story about Allison Stokke who, after posting a video on YouTube about how to improve your pole vaulting technique, received so much unwanted attention she doesn't leave the house alone, she employs a media advisor to fend off requests for photographs and she has her dad checking websites for potential stalkers (just one google search of her name shows how much attention there is). We've done stories like this before on WHYS most recently about the blogger Kathy Sierra but what do you make of this new one? Do you sympathise? Should more be done to police the internet, or if you post online should you accept the risks that go with it?

Organs donations and Telly Tubbies

Right, question time. What's Telly Tubby language for "hello everyone, Peter Dobbie here. It's me, with World have Your Say". More on that later -- oh, and if you just answered that question with something like "eee-ohr" you've watched far too much television :-)

First, how far would you go to save a loved one, or indeed save your own life?..

...Would you go on a reality game show -- if the prize meant the difference between life and death. A Dutch TV station says it will go ahead with a programme in which a terminally ill woman selects one of three patients to receive her kidneys. Is this all in the worst possible taste, or has the broadcaster got it right: this is actually about highlighting a huge shortage of organ donors. How far can reality television go ? Would you watch such a show -- and, be honest, if you did watch it, WHY would you watch it. Let us know what you think.

Right, to the Telly Tubbies. Did you ever think Tinky Winky, was, well, gay ? Yes, gay, as in homosexual. Not just really happy, in a fat, purple, aeriel on his head, kind of a way. There is a serious side to this because a senior Polish official has ordered psychologists to investigate whether the popular BBC TV show -- the Teletubbies -- "promotes" a homosexual lifestyle. Now I have to be honest here -- I think that little word "promotes" is pretty dangerous. What does that use of "promotes" really mean here. Is that simply a cover for good old fashioned homo-phobia. Is there a broader issue here -- by highlighting this does the official in question, a Ms Sowinska, send out a huge signal: gay equals bad, straight equals good. Are we being over sensitive, or has the world really moved on to a time where gay people are not singled out as different. Let us know what you think.

WHYS in Africa

Not long now till WHYS embarks on it's biggest trip ever. We're off to East and West Africa for the first time in the programme's history. We're all hugely excited by the chance to meet some of you who listen in Africa and by the challenge of reflecting your lives and concerns to the rest of the world. There'll be seven shows from four countries in two weeks and, as always, we need your help.

Before I tell you how you can help here's where we'll be and and when...

...First stop, the Nigerian capital, Abuja. We'll be doing two shows from here on Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th May.

Then, after a brief hop, skip and a jump we'll be in Ghana's largest city (oh yeah, and it's capital) Accra, for an extravaganza on Friday 18th.

Having caught our breath and battled through three sets of customs we'll be in Kampala (fingers crossed!) for two shows on Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd. Now, no promises but we're hoping to have the Ugandan President, Yoweri Musveni with us to take your questions and discuss, among other things, the talk about an East African Union. If we do get the President on the programme, what do you want to ask him? What things do you think he needs to hear? Let us know and we'll put it to him.

The final leg of this journey takes us to Nairobi. The last two shows will be broadcast to the world on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th May, thus ending what we hope will have been another successful, informative and energetic voyage into the lives of some of WHYS' most loyal listeners.

So, how can you help? Well, as always, you're the best guide to what we should be talking about. What do you want to hear from this trip? What are the issues that make you angry, excited or concerned? What questions do you want answered? What are the main issues, not just in the countries we're going to, but across the whole of Africa? It doesn't have to be serious politics; maybe it's some local issue you want the world to know about. Are you in Africa, have you been there? What did you make of it? Does it get a fair representation in the press?

Whatever you want to say, say it here.

MURDER

As news reports continue to come in as to exactly what happened on the night Bob Woolmer died it's now clear that he was murdered. There's so much i'd like to say about this story but until all the facts come out I think i'll keep my thoughts to myself. Nevertheless I think this is a must do story for WHYS and i'd love to know what you'd like to say about this. Are you shocked, angry, saddened, surprised, all of the above or none of the above? What are your memories of the man? Let us know..

Mark's already sent his ideas for today's show and I pretty much agree so here they are...

Woolmer is way up the list, as is Gore. No, not the horror variety, the former presidential candidate variety. They'll be environmentalists in the audience today who've all got opinions on him. Is he the man to save the planet? Is he running for president or not? Do we believe him? Is he sincere?

A prominent Roman Catholic archbishop in Zimbabwe has called for mass street protests to force President Robert Mugabe from power. The Archbishop of Bulawayo, Pius Ncube, told a news conference in Harare that he was willing to stand in front of "blazing guns" if necessary. Are mass street protests the only way to resolve the current situation in Zimbabwe? Would you be prepared to lay down your life for your freedom? Should leaders of organised religions be speaking this way?

And finally... I'm adding this one because it made me laugh. It's the story of David Opati a.k.a "Kenya's naked man". He poses from billboards across the country, asking people to open a bank account. But - in what is considered a daring move in Kenya - he is dressed in nothing but floral boxer shorts, socks and shoes. Have you seen the picture? Did it distract you as you were driving past? Would you like to see more semi-naked men like David on billboards in your country?

Impeaching freedom of thought and expression

Should George Bush be impeached over Iraq? Following yesterday's show you really wanted to talk about this and today we are. What do you think about this? Should Bush be impeached? Or is it too late for anything like this to make a difference?

Freedom of thought and expression. Are school children being discouraged to express their own opinions? We've spoken about three stories, one from the UK, one from Poland and one from US in which the free thought and expression of youngsters haas been stifled. Check out the stories and let me know what you think.

Here are the rest of the meeting notes

The issue of impeachment is on the cards today. Martin "Tommy" Vennard has been looking at the blogs and the most read and most emailed stories. The top stories are all things Iraq, including talk of Bush's impeachment, the death of the Pakistan cricket coach and the GM mosquito to cure malaria.

There's been a few ideas floating around about what's acceptable to do or say at school. Or indeed how much can we control what children say and do at school? The first story that kicked this off was from the British press about schools being able to ban pupils from wearing full-face veils on security, safety or learning grounds.

The there's the story about a student in the USA who displayed a banner with the words "Bong Hits 4 Jesus". Now, this happened in 2002 but it's gone so far that it's made it all the way to the supreme court.

And finally, Poland wants to ban the discussion of homosexuality in schools.

Here's a few other ideas.

Is accent snobbery alive and well? Have you ever encountered or practised accent snobbery?

Crisis in Darfur: new arrivals to the refugee camps are turned away because there are not enough places, is un/the rest of the world doing enough?

Euroscepticism at 44% as 50th birthday of EU comes closer, what's the future of the Union?

We're live in Cleveland, Ohio - early thoughts

All this week WHYS is live from the US - starting out in Cleveland, Ohio. It's four years since the start of the Iraq conflict, and there are plenty of Iraq stories in the news. Would you like to hear a conversation between Americans and Iraqis? A debate about whether or not to impeach President Bush for leading the country into an illegal war? More about the crackdown in Zimbabwe? Or something completely different?

There were anti-war protests in cities across the US at the weekend to mark the Iraq invasion anniversary - and some counter pro-war demos too. But looking at it from London, it's striking that the anti-war demos in Spain were far larger than any of those in the US - so should we be talking about the failure of the anti-war camp to mobilise large numbers of protestors?

And on a related theme - there are increasing calls from grassroots Democrats and others for a debate on impeaching George W Bush - but the Democratic party leadership isn't keen on the idea. Is that lack of leadership one reason why the anti-war movement seems to lack focus? And should we hear the arguments and views on all sides of the impeachment debate?

BBC News is headlining a new survey of opinion among ordinary Iraqis. The results make grim reading, showing a big increase in support for attacks on coalition forces serving there and increasing pessimism about the prospects for the country.

Or we could talk about Zimbabwe some more. There were more beatings and arrests of prominent opposition figures over the weekend, and the MDC leader said the country is at a 'tipping-point'. Do you agree?

We meet in half an hour....so all your comments and suggestions are welcome...and if you want to join our morning meeting by phone, just drop us an email or call us and we'll take it from there.
