You don't always need to spend money to enjoy yourself. Getting outside for a walk is free, and the British countryside has so much to offer. Presenter Dan Walker joined BBC Morning Live to talk through the best way to explore the top walking routes across Yorkshire and beyond.

Tips for getting started

Dan says:

"You can fly abroad to find somewhere beautiful, but the UK already has it all.

In Yorkshire alone you've got coastline, hills, dales, villages and cities. Walking through these places is a joy, and what makes it even better is when people join you on the way. Sometimes it's someone walking from the shop to the pub, other times it's people following the same trail. It's a shared experience."

He adds:

"You don't need to go far. A local park, a short coastal walk or even a stroll that ends at the pub can be just as rewarding. It doesn't matter what time of year it is, but autumn in the UK is a perfect time to get outside."

Dan admits that many people stick to the same route because they don't know where else to look, feel safer with the familiar, or want to be sure of facilities. His number one tip is to plan your walk. That means checking the terrain, distance, parking and whether the route is accessible. He also advises taking screenshots of maps in case your phone signal drops and always letting family or friends know where you are heading if walking alone.

Websites and apps to try

Dan recommends a few online resources that make planning easier:

National Trust

Free walking routes across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, with details on duration, terrain, accessibility, facilities and step-by-step guides.

Walking Scotland

A mix of routes and tips, with links to Visit Scotland, Nature Scot and National Trust Scotland.

The Wildlife Trusts

Walks highlighting local wildlife to look out for throughout the year, plus accessibility details.

Local walking apps

Regional apps exist for places like the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District, the Cotswolds and Snowdonia. Always check reviews and whether there's a charge before downloading.

Walking with others

If you prefer group walks, there are plenty of ways to find one:

The Ramblers

Over 500 local groups across the UK, searchable by postcode.

Social media groups

Hundreds of community walking groups based on location or shared interests.

Simple online search

Typing "walking group" and your town often brings up local options.

Community centres and cafés

Many display posters advertising local walking meet-ups.

Whether you want a solo stroll or to meet others, the options are there. As Dan says, "Walking can be emotional. You stop, look out at where you are, and think wow, we live here!"
