Life for Big Issue man's murder
Tomos Archer and Adrian Butt
Tomos Archer and Adrian Butt are caught on CCTV
Two men who tortured to death a south Wales Big Issue seller in an attempt to steal his day's takings have been jailed for life.

Tomos Archer and Adrian Butt wanted Nicholas Shannon to reveal where he kept the money from selling the magazine on the streets of Swansea.
Swansea Crown Court
The pair were convicted at Swansea Crown Court

They slashed him around the throat with a knife and stabbed him in the chest when he refused to tell them what they wanted to know.

The pair eventually left the 49-year-old to bleed to death at his home in Dyfatty, Swansea, after first taking some of his belongings.

Archer, 20, and 24-year-old Butt denied murder but were convicted by a jury at Swansea Crown Court and jailed for life.

The court heard how Archer and Butt called on Mr Shannon in the early hours of March 14, because they were short of money.

He was repeatedly stabbed as he sat or lay on a bed.

A neighbour had recognised Archer's voice and the men were quickly arrested.

The two men sought to blame each other during police questioning.

Fatal injuries

Archer told police that Butt had "gone beserk" and had attacked Mr Shannon.

But Butt claimed he had not entered the flat.

However, detectives found DNA evidence linking both men to the attack and in court the pair carried on blaming each other for inflicting the fatal injuries.

The Judge, Mr Justice Turner, said the most likely explanation was that first Butt and then Archer had decided to steal money from Mr Shannon.

Archer and Butt, both of Exchange Buildings, Swansea, showed no emotion as they were led away.
