Man injured in 'tombstoning dive'

A young man has suffered serious neck and back injuries after plunging off a Hampshire pier in what Coastguards believe was a "tombstoning" incident.

Emergency crews were called to South Parade Pier in Southsea at about 1450 BST on Sunday.

The 20-year-old had jumped about 9m (30ft) into 1m (3.38ft) deep water and hit the bottom causing severe injuries.

He was airlifted to Queen Alexandra Hospital. The coastguard warned about the dangers of tombstoning.

The practice involves diving from a height into water.
