Repair work has already begun to repair the Lake District paths |
Walkers have donated money to help repair two badly eroded popular Lake District paths. There was a metre-deep gully on Wansfell, and the Crummock Water path was spreading across an important wetland habitat and had become boggy.
The Ramblers' Association has donated 4,500 to help repair the routes.
Last year the Lake District National Park Authority started an online appeal to raise 5m to repair 145 eroded paths in the area.
The damage to Wansfell was due to the numbers using the path and to avoid the gully, walkers were forming new trails which would have led to more erosion.
Costs for repairing a 350m stretch came to 19,000 and although Heritage Lottery funding helps finance restoration work, grants have to be matched by the National Park Authority and its partners.
Upland paths adviser Richard Fox said: "Generous donations from organisations like the Ramblers' Association and individuals are absolutely vital."
On the Crummock Water path, people were walking wider and damaging vegetation as they tried to find dry footing. Repairing 150m cost 22,000.
