North Yorkshire Police is considering setting up one phone nunber for all non-emergency calls from the public.

At the moment, stations have their own phone numbers listed in the directory.

But officers think it might be better to have one easy to remember number which would be answered at a central police control centre.

This would also save the 999 emergency system from being abused.

Many other forces, including West Yorkshire, already have one number for non-urgent calls.
