The luxurious hotel in traditional houses built of mud and salt serves organic food, appropriate for a prince who champions natural farming methods.

Later, the royals braved heat and dust to visit the oasis town of Siwa.

Camilla sheltered under a parasol as she explored market stalls in the town, close to the border with Libya. One of the stall holders handed her a manasha - a brightly coloured swat to keep away the flies.

The royal couple are in Egypt as part of their second royal tour together, which will also include visits to Saudi Arabia and India.

On Wednesday they visited a horse sanctuary, where many of the equine patients have been injured in Cairo's traffic.

The tour has included a visit to Al-Azhar University, where Prince Charles received an honorary degree and gave a speech calling for respect between religions.
