Britney and Kevin Federline divorce
Pop star Britney Spears files for divorce from husband Kevin Federline citing "irreconcilable differences". The singer had married the former dancer in 2004 in a secret ceremony. The couple had their first child Sean Preston in 2005. They announced the birth of their second son named Jayden James Federline in the divorce papers in September 2006.

Kevin Federline fights for custody
Kevin Federline says he is planning to fight pop star Britney Spears for sole custody of their children. In court papers filed in Los Angeles the rapper says he intends to take action to protect and safeguard their two young sons. She says she wants physical and legal custody of the couple's yearold son and new baby.

Britney has her head shaved
Britney Spears is spotted by fans and paparazzi in a Los Angeles tattoo parlour shaving off her trademark mane of blonde hair. Several auctions appear later on eBay claiming to be selling "genuine" locks of Britney's hair. She is reported to have recently checked in to an Antigua rehabilitation centre and checked out one day later.

Singer returns to rehab clinic
Britney Spears is back in rehab days after shaving her head. Reports claim she checked into an unnamed facility at the request of her mother and other family members. Britney Spears checks out of rehab after just one day for the second time in a week according to US reports. Her estranged husband Kevin Federline asks for an emergency hearing in the couple's ongoing custody battle.

Stage comeback in San Diego
Britney Spears makes her first appearance on stage since leaving a rehabilitation clinic. She performs five songs at the House of Blues club in San Diego. An unknown act called The MampM's had originally been billed to appear at the California venue. As she left after performing for 20 minutes the star said "Thanks everyone for coming."

Rock bottom before rehab
Britney Spears says she "truly hit rock bottom" when she went to rehab earlier this year. In a message on her website the singer writes that she "genuinely did not know what to do with myself" following her split from husband Kevin Federline. But she denies her spell in rehab was the result of "alcohol or depression".

Spears says sorry for umbrella attack
Britney Spears apologises for attacking a photographer's car with an umbrella earlier this year. Pictures of the star lashing out appeared in several newspapers shortly after photos emerged of her shaving her head in a hair salon. In a message on her website she says "I apologise to the pap for a stunt that was done four months ago."

Divorce is made final
The divorce of pop star Britney Spears and former dancer Kevin Federline is completed and they are no longer married Spears' lawyer confirms. An agreement over custody of their two sons is also approved by the court. The lawyer describes Spears as being "OK" with the terms of the settlement but says she "would like to be with her kids more".

MTV Awards comeback falls flat
Britney Spears' first major performance in three years at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas is widely dismissed as a disaster. The BBC's David Willis says her performance will "go down in the history books as being one of the worst to grace the MTV Awards". The singer looked "really out of sorts" and "looked as though she completely lost the art of lipsynching" he says.

Dropped by management
Britney Spears is dropped by her management company one month after employing their services. Los Angelesbased The Firm said "We have terminated our professional relationship with Britney Spears. We believe she is enormously talented but current circumstances have prevented us from properly doing our job."

Ordered to have drugs tests
Britney Spears is ordered to undergo random drug and alcohol tests twice a week according to court documents in her child custody dispute. Los Angeles Superior Court judge Scott M Gordon describes her as "a habitual frequent and continuous use of controlled substances and alcohol".

Hitandrun charge
Britney Spears is charged with hitandrun and driving without a valid licence. She is accused of hitting a parked car and driving away from a Los Angeles car park on 6 August. If convicted she could face six months in jail and a 1000 �495 fine.

Star loses custody battle
Britney Spears is ordered to hand over her two young children to her former husband. Los Angeles judge Scott Gordon rules Kevin Federline should be given custody of Sean Preston two and oneyearold Jayden James until "further notice". The couple had shared custody and the reason for the change is not given.

Hit and run charges dropped
Hitandrun charges dating back to an incident in a Los Angeles car park in August are dropped after Spears compensated the other car's driver a judge rules. But the singer is stil left facing a charge of driving without a valid licence.

Spears' former husband is given sole custody of their two young sons. The singer is also told she has lost the right to visit Sean Preston and Jayden James. The court ruling follows an incident involving Spears in which she refused to return the boys to Kevin Federline after a monitored visit.

Spears admitted to hospital
Spears is admitted to a psychiatric ward at the UCLA Medical Center after being taken from her home in an ambulance. US talk show host Barbara Walters says Spears' manager told her the star was suffering from "treatable" psychiatric problems including mood swings and loss of sleep.

Spears has control of her estate and her own welfare taken from her under order of a court. The pop star and her assets are placed under the "conservatorship" of her father James Spears following her admittance to a psychiatric ward.

Parents fear for Britneys life
Jamie and Lynne Spears say they are "extremely disappointed" after their daughter is released from hospital against the recommendation of her psychiatrist. "We are deeply concerned about our daughter's safety and vulnerability and we believe her life is presently at risk" they say in a joint statement.
